Chapter 22 of 30 · 1 min read

Summer Day Camp Behaviour Support and Clear Limits

Teach a few simple rules and show children what they mean in everyday activities. Respond calmly, look for unmet needs and record concerns factually. Use a clear escalation route when behaviour affects safety or another child's wellbeing.

Start with a few clear rules: stay with the group, use safe hands, respect other people, and ask for help. Show what the rules look like. Do not rely only on a poster.

When a child struggles, check the setting. Are they hungry, confused, overwhelmed by sound, unable to join, or waiting too long? Adjusting the task can work better than repeating a warning.

Use calm words:

“I will help keep everyone safe. You can build at this table or take a quiet break with Sam.”

A quiet break must remain supervised and should not become isolation or humiliation. Do not withhold water, food, medicine, toilets, or needed support as punishment.

For repeated harm, protect others, record facts, speak privately with the family, and make a support plan. Include what staff will change, what help is needed, and when the plan will be reviewed.

Set a fair removal process for situations the camp cannot safely manage. Get local advice on disability accommodation, legal duties, notice, collection, and refunds. Do not invent a blanket exclusion after the family has paid.

Do this next: Give staff two safe scripts and a clear escalation route for common problems.
