Chapter 4 of 30 · 1 min read

Summer Day Camp Local Rules and Business Setup

Tell the local authority exactly which ages, hours, care, food and activities your day camp will offer. Confirm how the program is classified before renting space. Record the approvals and checks that apply to your actual plan.

Ask the relevant local office how it classifies your actual program. Describe ages, hours, activities, whether guardians leave, and whether food or transport is offered. Do not ask only, “Do camps need a licence?” The answer may depend on those details.

Check whether early care and late care change the classification. Check preschool places separately. A recreation exemption, where one exists, should be confirmed for the specific offer rather than assumed from a camp name.

Ask the venue about permitted use, occupancy, fire exits, accessibility, washrooms, food preparation, outdoor access, and shared users. A room being available to rent does not prove it is approved for your program.

Choose who legally operates the camp. A business owner, school, sports club, or nonprofit must be named in contracts, invoices, insurance, and parent information. Customers should know who holds their money and who handles complaints.

Keep a written approval record. Include the question, answer, date, official contact, and any condition. Check renewal dates before each season. Do not use this handbook as evidence that a particular exemption applies.

Do this next: Complete the local approval record at the end of this guide before taking non-refundable commitments.
