Tell people what happens if they become separated, using the approved site- and activity-specific plan. Do not give one universal instruction that may be unsafe in every environment.
Make the first section a useful observation period. The qualified leader can check actual pace, equipment comfort, and group needs while options remain easy to change.
Record any revised grouping or plan before moving on. The base contact should have the current route and roster, not an earlier version.
