Faith and Community Camp Faith Content and Participation Choices
Explain worship, prayer, study, reflection and other planned practices before booking. State what is required, optional or offered as an alternative. Give families enough information to choose the camp without discovering important expectations after arrival.
Families should know what the program includes. List worship, prayer, scripture or text study, stories, music, reflection, service, and other practices that are actually planned.
Say which activities are central, which are optional, and what alternatives exist. Do not describe an activity as optional if declining it leads to shame, lost privileges, or exclusion from ordinary care.
A faith-specific camp can explain and teach its tradition clearly. That does not require pressuring a participant to make a personal declaration or disclose private beliefs.
For interfaith programs, agree with appropriately involved representatives on how content is presented. Do not ask one child to speak for an entire religion or community.
For community programs without faith teaching, keep that promise too. A staff member should not add personal religious instruction during care time without the program's approval and proper disclosure.
Review materials for age suitability, language, emotional intensity, and respect for participants. Avoid fear, humiliation, or threats as a way to obtain a response.
