Chapter 14 of 30 · 1 min read

Faith and Community Camp Recruiting and Screening Volunteers

Give volunteers defined jobs with suitable screening, training, supervision and support. Check the same care and conduct needs that apply to paid workers. Familiarity with the organization should not replace the recruitment process.

Volunteers can bring care, skills, and community connection. They still need clear roles, screening, training, supervision, and support.

Write each role before recruiting. Name the tasks, hours, skills, age requirements where relevant, physical demands, expenses, and person supervising the role.

Complete required checks and references. Apply the process consistently to relatives, long-time members, donors, clergy, and returning volunteers as appropriate. Being well known is not the same as being cleared for a role.

Confirm whether a role can lawfully be volunteer work in your setting. Labels such as volunteer, stipend, honorarium, or intern do not by themselves settle employment obligations. Get local advice.

Do not place a willing person in a specialist role they are not qualified for. Driving, food service, health support, water activities, and technical instruction may have separate requirements.

Keep a reserve list, but do not assume a last-minute helper is ready without training. A backup needs the same relevant preparation.

Your task: Recruit to role cards and record who is cleared, trained, available, and actually assigned.
