Arts and Creative Camp Entry Skills and Fair Selection
State any required experience, equipment or audition before booking. Make beginner camps accessible to true beginners and explain selection criteria for advanced groups. Do not let hidden costs or expectations decide who can take part.
An open beginner camp should truly welcome beginners. Do not require hidden skills, expensive equipment, or the ability to read music unless this is stated before booking.
For a focused camp, describe entry skills through actions. “Can play a short piece and follow a simple rehearsal cue” is clearer than “Intermediate musician.” A qualified teacher should define the actual requirement.
If you use an audition or portfolio, explain what to submit, who reviews it, when a decision arrives, and what happens to money paid. Offer accessible ways to show the same relevant skill where possible.
Avoid treating confidence as talent. A quiet child may need more time to answer. A new language learner may understand a task better through a demonstration. Judge the skill you need, not unrelated presentation style.
For ensembles, record the balance you need. Ten drummers and no other players may not fit the band program you sold. You may need separate availability by instrument or role.
Do not guarantee a lead role, solo, or exhibition placement unless you can honour it fairly. Explain casting and selection before payment. Offer meaningful work beyond the spotlight.
Your task: Write a placement process that a new family can understand without knowing arts-school language.
